Dana Schutz

The Visible World
The exhibition, presented at the ARC, looks back over twenty years of work by American artist Dana Schutz.

It showcases the consistency of her work through a chronological presentation of some fifty paintings and a dozen sculptures, some of which have never been shown to the public. Born in 1976 in the Detroit area, Dana Schutz now lives in New York City. She is a leading figure on the international art scene. A virtuoso of colour, she examines both the disturbing sensations of intimacy and the often violent feel of large crowds, which have become part of our collective memory. There are also hints of humour throughout her work, which is also deeply rooted in art history.

In these depictions of the undepictable, she shows us the artist at work, the body under construction, the obsolescence of a sick world, lacklustre victories over indeterminate causes and, in recent years, increasingly ghostly scenes – mental images like dark reflections of our contemporary world. This is Dana Schutz’s first solo exhibition in France.

The exhibition Dana Schutz, The Visible World, is organized by the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris in close collaboration with the Louisiana Museum in Humlebæk (Denmark).

Dana Schutz was born in Livonia, Michigan, in 1976. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
