The Unknown Masterpiece

Between genius and madness

The Unknown Masterpiece is one of Balzac's most famous novels. Its intimate intertwining of the themes of eroticism, aesthetics and death has inspired philosophers and artists alike, appearing as an inexhaustible source of creation and reflection. The exhibition aims to demonstrate this influence.

Thanks to a hitherto unseen collection of paintings, drawings and films from the 20th and 21st centuries, the exhibition offers a real meditation on art.  The works of major artists like Pablo Picasso and Anselm Kiefer were inspired by this fantasy tale, which, through Balzac's many reworks, became a philosophical essay on the purpose of artistic expression.
